MONTHLY MEETING

 EZRA S. GRIFFIN CAMP #8

February 11, 1993

The meeting was called to order by Camp Commander Bob Shaffer followed by the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Other members in attendance were:

Russ W. Jones Russ P. Jones Ron Albert Bob Yeager Bob Price
Bill Burns Joe Long Bill Lindberg Bob Bergen

The minutes from the last meeting were read and an error in the amount of the check for Joe Long was corrected.  A motion to accept the minutes was made by Bill Lindberg and seconded by Russ W. Jones.  All were in favor.

COMMITTEE REPORT:

Dinner for Dept. Commander and President.

Bill Lindberg reported stopping at the 6 East Restaurant on Route 6 in Dickson City.  The menu was very favorable.  There is a large room downstairs to hold a dinner meeting.  A motion to accept this restaurant for our dinner meeting was made by Bob Yeager and seconded by Bob Price.  Bob Shaffer also mentioned that our brothers from Bangor would also be invited.

COMMITTEE REPORT:

Application for Joseph Donly III.

Committee members Bill Burns, Bob Bergen and Russ P. Jones approved the application for membership for Mr. Donly.

At this time, Commander Shaffer called the members to attention and presented the Past Camp Commanders badge to Bob Bergan.

OLD BUSINESS:

Bob Yeager reported that he had spoken to Mr. Vince Rizzo from the Scranton School District.  Mr. Rizzo said he would be glad to help us out in any way with the scholarship program.  An invitation to attend our February Camp meeting was made, but Mr. Rizzo had to decline due to a previous commitment.  He will be asked to meet with Camp members on February 18, 1993 at 7:00 p.m. before the GAR Association meeting.

Bob Shaffer reported that the carpenter is in process of putting the sign together.   It is approximately 2' x 3' and will stand at least 5' high.  Bill Lindberg was asked about having it painted.  Bill said he would check on it.  If not, Bob Yeager said he had a back-up.

NEW BUSINESS:

A committee was appointed to try to get information on the scholarship.  The committee is made up of Bob Yeager, Bob Bergen and Bob Shaffer.

Joe Long said he would have a new member.  Fred Smith would be presented with a badge at the Blue & Gold Banquet.  He is a relative of Mr. Sanders from our Camp.

The issue of members holding a seat on the Board was brought up.  A discussion at the Association meeting revealed that these board members are court appointed and it would cost too much money to appoint new members at this time.  When their terms expire, a change will be made.

Bob Price donated a picture of Co. G, 141st PA. from Bradford County, recruited in Honesdale, PA.  Bob let us know that his grandfather was the 4th man from the right in the picture.  His unit had 1000 men and there were 800 casualties.

Joe Long presented a bill for $16.40 ($14.50 for postage and $1.90 for a frame).  A motion to pay Joe was made by Bill Lindberg and seconded by Bob Price.  All were in favor.

Joe Long also brought back to the Camp two binders containing the applications for the Women's Relief Corps and the Ladies Auxiliary.  The applications were placed in plastic covers to preserve their quality.

Ron Albert made a motion to send a donation to Grant's Cottage in memory of U.S. Grant and to help with the up-keep of the cottage.  Joe Long moved to send a $15.00 donation to the cottage.  This was seconded by Ron Albert.  All were in favor.

Some members complained about not receiving their cancelled checks from the GAR Memorial Association.  Joe Long would check into the problem.

Bob Shaffer made a proposal to donate $50.00 to the Dept. Commander for travel and lodging for his upcoming visit.  He also suggested that the Camp also pay for his dinner.  A second motion was placed on the floor by Russ P. Jones to also pay for his wife's dinner.  This was seconded by Joe Long.  All were in favor of the Camp donating the $50.00 and also paying for both dinners.  This is the first time in over 50 years that the Dept. Commander and President have visited the Camp and Auxiliary.

It was also mentioned that we may want to contact some of the smaller weekly papers in the area to get out the word to people about the Camp, Library and Museum and to possibly attract new members.  Bill Lindberg said he would try.

With no further business, questions or comments, a motion to adjourn was made by Joe Long and seconded by Bob Yeager.

Respectfully Submitted,

Robert C. Shaffer
Asst. Secretary
