MONTHLY MEETING

 EZRA S. GRIFFIN CAMP #8

February 19, 1998

 

The meeting was called to order by Commander Russ W. Jones, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Other members in attendance were:

The minutes from the January meeting were approved as read.  A motion to accept the minutes was made by Bill Lindberg and seconded by Dennis Rightmire.  All were in favor.

 

FINANCIAL REPORT:

Phil Jones, Bill Lindberg and Dennis Rightmire audited and approved the 1997 books.

 

Joe Long read the financial report with the following information:

     End Balance as of January - $1,272.17

     $199.00 in Members Help fund

     New checks were purchased

     Balance February $1,455.77

     November drawing won by Tom Maldaorn

     January drawing won by Ted Lysak

 

A motion to accept the Financial report was made by Russ P. Jones and seconded by Bill Lindberg.   All were in favor and the report was referred to the audit committee.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

A discussion was held regarding the Department Commander’s visit.  We will propose to him that he visits us on April 25, May 2 or May 9.

 

Joe, Dennis and Ed Walter attended the ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Maine at Nay Aug Park, Everhart Museum on February 15th.

 

An article regarding the cannon matter appeared in the Civil War News (Feb/Mar 1998).

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Russ P. Jones read correspondence from Harry Readshaw, member 36th Legislative District informing us of the project to preserve the Pennsylvania Monument and 110 other monuments on the Battlefield at Gettysburg.  A package of information was distributed to all members which included sample letters and a petition form.

 

Bill Lindberg mentioned that the Appomattox Dinner will be held on March 28th.

 

Joe mentioned that we should take out a ½ page ad in the Department Encampment book.  Motion made by Bill Lindberg and seconded by Ron Albert.  All were in favor.

 

Joe mentioned the National Encampment will be held in Harrisburg on August 6th - 9th.  Members of the camp are encouraged to attend.  Registration is $7.00 and those registering will receive a metal commemorative badge.

 

Commander Jones appointed a committee to review the applications of Phil C. Jones Jr., James Brown Jr. and Earl Folk.  Members of the committee were Ron Albert, Bob Yeager and Bill Burns.

 

Joe reported that Joseph Donly and Joseph Donly Jr. resigned from the organization.

 

Joe brought up the idea of purchasing another set of raffle tickets.  He made a motion and it was seconded by Russ P. Jones to buy 25 sets for $100.00.  All were in favor.

 

Joe mentioned the idea of running another essay contest.  He asked if anyone would be interested in running a contest at any other schools.  He brought up the idea of having a second and third place award of a $50.00 savings bond in addition to the $1000.00 savings bond for first place.  Ron Albert expressed an interest in running a contest at a school in the Montrose area.  Joe will probably run a contest at the West Scranton Middle School.  Joe made the motion and it was seconded by Phil Jones.

 

Joe started a discussion on the Memorial Day services.  A guest speaker is needed.  Members were asked to come up with ideas.  Joe will check with the History Professor who spoke at the Maine Ceremony.

 

Ron Albert brought in a Spencer Carbine to show the camp members.

 

50/50 drawing was won by Dennis Rightmire.

 

With no further business, questions or discussion, a motion to adjourn was made by Joe Long and seconded by Phil C. Jones.  All were in favor.
