OLD BUSINESS:

Joe Long reported that Commander Ray Sulger, Craig Kelly and Bob Gregory will carry the flags on July 4th at Nay Aug Park.  He asked that everyone arrive between 10:15 and 10:30 am.

Joe also reported that our next Open House will be held on June 20, 2009, from 12:00 to 3:00 pm.  Our next scheduled open houses will be held on July 18 and August 15, 2009.

Commander Sulger relayed information concerning the upcoming Encampment to those members who will be traveling to New Oxford.  For those members not present, information is available on the Department website.

NEW BUSINESS:

Joe Ferrara reported that a Civil War statue is in need of repair at the Wilkes-Barre City Cemetery.  He also found other broken monuments and markers.  He asked for volunteers to help in an effort to correct these problems.  Joe Long suggested he contact the Luzerne County Court House to find out who is the caretaker for the Cemetery.  More information to follow.

Commander Sulger reported that the Taylor Historical Society hosted a tour of the Forest Hill Cemetery.  They had a total of $400.00 in donations.  Bob Gregory read a brief history of an Afro-American Civil War Veteran, John Merryweather, who operated a trucking firm in the city.

Commander Sulger informed the Camp that another Veteran, John W. Barnes, was arrested and died a few hours later while being held, had no stone and for the last 125 years was not fully appreciated for his valor.  Commander Sulger will apply for the marker and the Cemetery conveyed that there will be no charge for its installation when received.

Commander Sulger showed the children's kepis and pins that were available for sale to help fund the GAR Memorial Association.  They will be available in the Museum for a donation of $5.00 each.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER:

The next meeting of Camp 8 will be held on September 17, 2009, since no meetings are held during the months of July and August.
