MONTHLY MEETING

EZRA S. GRIFFIN CAMP #8

October 21, 2017

 

The meeting was called to order in ritualistic fashion by Commander Hal Myers.

The minutes for the September meeting were read.  A motion was made to accept the minutes by Jim Jones and seconded by Craig Kelly.  All were in favor.

 

The financial report was read by Joe Long with the following information:

 

A motion to accept was made by Giovan Lisi and seconded by Jerry Skotleski.   All were in favor.

 

CORRESPONDENCE:   

DO #2 - Camps who have lost their exempt status; Past Commanders and Past Presidents Annual Dedication Day Dinner; 61st Annual Remembrance Day Parade November 18, 2017; Fundraiser supporting Ladies Auxiliary October 25, 2017 at Friendly’s in Dunmore.

 

COMMITTEE:   

Eagle Scout Coordinator Jim Jones reported no active requests for September.  One certificate will be presented in October in Dingmans Township.  He attended the Delaware River District of the Hudson Valley Scout Council and spoke to Key leaders concerning our Eagle Scot Program. 

 

Jim also spoke about the getting information out to local colleges and schools about our ROTC Certificate Program.  He volunteered to head this effort and would compile a listing starting with the colleges.  A Certificate would be provided for the top Military Student in that class.  Joe said we would need to know ahead of time so we could procure the Certificate.  Howard said the University of Scranton coordinates for the U.S. Army. 

 

Commander Myers made a motion that Jim be able to pursue this venture seconded by Joe Long.  All were in favor.

 

Planning Committee Chairman Jerry O’Malley passed out a sign-up sheet to members for volunteers to help with jobs within the Museum. 

 

NEW BUSINESS:   

Craig Kelly made a motion that we make Harry Mertz an Honorary Member Posthumously for all his contributions to the Camp.  Commander Myers agreed and seconded this motion.  All were in favor.

 

By unanimous vote, it was decided that our next Meeting and Open House will be held on November 18, 2017 at 10:30 and 12:00 respectively.  There will also be a research Open House on November 4, 2017 from 12:00 to 3:00pm.

 

Commander Myers reported he would not be seeking another term as Commander.

 

On October 28, 2017, the Scranton READS will be having a program at the Museum to read and discuss letters and journals in the Library.  Commander Myers and Jerry O’Malley reported that the program on October 20th went very well.

 

Commander Myers talked about the Lease of the Museum.  City Council is working on it and is requesting that it be set for another ten years.  Mayoral Candidate Mulligan has also said he has no problem with us staying here.

 

Craig Kelly asked that Color Bearer Giovan Lisi be given permission to carry the Camp Flag at the upcoming Remembrance Day Parade in Gettysburg.  Permission granted.

 

Commander Myers suspended the meeting for Nominations of Officers for next year.  The list consists of:

            SVC – Jim Jones nominated by Hal Myers seconded by Jerry Skotleski

            JVC – Jerry Skotleski nominated by Craig Kelly seconded by Hal Myers

            Secretary – Bob Shaffer nominated by Craig Kelly seconded by Hal Myers

            Treasurer – Joe Long nominated by Hal Myers seconded by Craig Kelly

 

All nominees accepted.  If anyone would be interested in helping out with Secretarial or Treasurer duties, please contact any of the Officers.

 

The meeting was then re-opened for closing.

           

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER: 

Patriotic Instructor Jerry O’Malley reported on events that occurred on October 19, 1864 Confederate forces at St. Albans, VT; October 21, 1864 Independence MO; and October 22, 1864, blockades in Charleston and Wilmington, NC.

 

Alana Zurinski of the Ladies Auxiliary gave information of the Christmas Pizza Party to be held on November 18, 2017 after the meeting.  Cost will be $5.00 per person.  It will consist of pizza and salad.  Members are asked to bring desserts and snacks.

 

With no further business, questions or discussion, the meeting was closed in ritualistic manner.
